The Campus Bird Count 2025 was successfully conducted at Sree Narayana College, Kannur, under the joint initiative of Kannur Mark, the college's IQAC, and the Biodiversity Club. The event was inaugurated by renowned birdwatcher Mr. Afsar Nayakkan, with Dr. K.P. Prasanth, Dr. Aparna, and Dr. Jishna leading the program. Held as part of the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) from February 14 to 17, 2025, the initiative provided an opportunity for students and professionals from various colleges, research institutions, and corporate organizations to participate. The primary objective was to document bird diversity across different campuses in India and contribute to a comprehensive evaluation of avian populations.
Key goals included recording campus bird diversity, fostering an interest in ornithology among students and faculty, raising awareness about environmental conservation, and contributing to global bird research initiatives. As part of the Biodiversity Club’s core activities, birdwatching excursions were conducted, where participants observed and documented birds in various campus locations. Data was collected every 15 minutes and uploaded to the eBird database. The observations were both engaging and informative, with participants identifying bird species, recording their numbers, scientific names, and behavioral traits. Additionally, expert-led sessions and discussions were organized on topics such as the ecological importance of birds, their habitats, and conservation measures. The collected data was uploaded to the GBBC platform. The campus recorded 34 bird species, including the Indian Robin, Magpie-Robin, Mynas, Woodpeckers, Drongos, Parakeets, and Cuckoos. The joint efforts of students and faculty significantly enriched the birdwatching experience, with e-certificates available for participants to emphasize the importance of environmental conservation.
