Sree Narayana College, Kannur observed World AIDS Day with a strong message on awareness and prevention. Principal Dr. K. P. Prasanth inaugurated the programme by wearing the Red Ribbon, symbolising solidarity with people living with HIV. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Prasanth highlighted the recent data from the Kerala State AIDS Control Society, which shows that although Kerala maintains one of the lowest HIV prevalence rates in the country (0.07% compared to the national 0.20%), the steady rise in new infections among the 15–24 age group is a matter of serious concern. Kerala reported 1,213 new HIV cases in 2024, and between 2022 and October 2025, a total of 4,477 new infections were detected, with 62.6% contracted through unsafe heterosexual sex involving multiple partners. He pointed out that new infections in the 15–24 age group have increased from 9% in 2022 to 15.4% in 2025, indicating the need for strengthened awareness among young people. Data also show that 24.6% of cases were through homosexual/bisexual routes, 8.1% from needle-sharing among injecting drug users, and 0.9% through mother-to-child transmission. Dr. Prasanth stressed the importance of youth-focused awareness campaigns, safe practices, and preventive strategies to address the rising trend of new infections.
