Welcome to Botany Department

The Department of Botany, established in 1960, is one of the leading Department in the field of teaching and research in plant sciences. Our department is also contributing to maintain plant diversity in the college campus. We have a small Botanical Garden, Green House and a good collection of well-preserved specimens in the museum. In addition to teaching; seminars, invited lectures, field trips, nature camps and visits to research centers form an integral part of the academic programme of the department. Faculty members have active collaborations with scientists from Institutes in or outside India. Faculty members of Botany Department are recipients of various awards, research projects. The faculty members hold responsible positions in the college for the smooth functioning of the different clubs and forums for supporting the students in developing their social commitment, cultural and literary talents. The department organizes various extension activities in collaboration with various supporting organizations. The Botany Department was received a status of recognized research center in affiliation with Kannur University in 2007. Department has well-equipped research lab

THE COURSE

To inculcate scientific awareness towards protecting diversity and Eco-environmental management of plant resources for sustainable development.

To inspire the students towards better understanding and use of IT/Computer oriented interphase.

SCOPE OF THE SUBJECT:

After completing graduation, student can appear for various competitive examinations like Indian Forest Services, Indian Administrative Services conducted by UPSC. He/she can also go for higher courses like M.Sc (Botany), M.Sc (Plant Science), M.Sc (Biotechnology), M.Sc. (Molecular Biology), M.Sc (Environment science), M.Sc. (Genetics). Amongst the careers available to a person who enjoys outdoors are positions as an Ecologist, Taxonomist, Conservationist, and Forester. Person with mathematical background might find biophysics, genetics, and developmental biology to be exciting fields. Someone with an interest in chemistry might become a Plant Physiologist, Plant Biochemist, Molecular Biologist or Chemotaxonomist. Student can also choose Biotechnology, Microbiology, Mycology and Phycology. Student can also opt for ornamental Horticulture and Landscape Design. Student can obtain specialization In Plant Breeding, Plant Pathology, Agronomy and Horticulture. Teaching Botany is challenging and rewarding career.
